Hanging Scales vs Crane Scales
Both hanging scales and crane scales work on the same principle of suspending the load from a calibrated load cell. The practical distinction is in capacity and construction. Hanging scales tend to be lighter-duty instruments, typically suited to capacities from a few kilograms up to around 300kg. They are commonly used in agricultural, retail, and light industrial settings where portability and ease of use matter as much as raw capacity.
Crane scales are engineered for heavier-duty applications, starting from around 150kg and scaling up to 12,000kg in our range. They are designed to be permanently or semi-permanently integrated into overhead crane and hoist systems and are built to handle the dynamic loads that come with lifting and swinging. The housings are robustly constructed, the load cells rated for both static and dynamic loading, and many models include remote displays and data output options for integration into wider systems.
Do Hanging and Crane Scales Need to Be Trade Approved?
Trade approval is required if the weight reading directly determines the price in a commercial transaction. If you are purchasing scrap metal by weight, selling agricultural produce by weight, or charging customers based on the weight of a load, then yes, the scale used for that transaction needs to carry the M verification marking under the UK Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (NAWI) regulations. If you are using hanging or crane scales purely for internal operational purposes, such as checking whether a load is within a crane's safe working limit, managing production batch weights, or monitoring stock movements, trade approval is not a legal requirement. What to Look for in a Hanging or Crane Scale
Capacity and resolution. Match the maximum capacity to your heaviest expected load, with headroom to spare. The resolution (the smallest weight increment displayed) matters for accuracy. For livestock or bulk materials, a resolution of 0.5kg or 1kg is typically sufficient. For precision applications, a finer division is preferable.
Display and readability. All models in our range feature high-contrast LED or LCD displays with backlit options for use in poor lighting conditions. Look for tare and hold functions, which allow you to zero the scale with a hook or attachment in place, and freeze the reading once the load has stabilised.

How Do You Calibrate a Hanging or Crane Scale?
Calibration of a hanging or crane scale involves applying a known reference weight and verifying that the scale's reading matches within the required tolerance. For simple portable hanging scales, this is often done with calibrated test weights placed in a sling or pan. For larger crane scales, calibration typically requires certified deadweight systems or calibrated load cells used as reference standards.
