GNW Instrumentation provides repair and refurbishment services for a wide range of industrial and professional measuring equipment. From our workshop in Southport, Merseyside, we inspect faulty, damaged and ageing instruments to establish whether a practical repair is available.

Our experience covers both electronic and mechanical instrumentation, including equipment that may no longer be supported by its original manufacturer. We can also modify selected instruments for a different range, connection or application, helping businesses make continued use of suitable equipment rather than replacing it unnecessarily.

Industrial instrument repair services

Instrumentation can develop faults through normal wear, accidental damage, contamination, component failure or long periods of service. Some problems are immediately visible, while others only become apparent when an instrument no longer responds correctly, produces unstable readings or fails a calibration check.

Our technicians inspect the equipment and assess its condition before recommending the appropriate work. There is no charge for the initial inspection. If a repair is possible, we will explain what is required and provide a quotation before proceeding.

Return-to-base instrument repairs

Most repair work is completed at our Southport workshop, where our technicians have access to the equipment and facilities needed to investigate faults and test completed repairs. A return-to-base service is suitable for individual instruments as well as batches of equipment collected during maintenance, inspection or calibration work.

When requesting a repair, include a clear description of the fault and any circumstances in which it occurs. Details such as intermittent readings, leakage, impact damage, display faults or failure at a particular part of the range can help us assess the instrument more efficiently.

Pressure and vacuum instrument repairs

GNW has extensive experience working with analogue and digital pressure equipment. We can assess faults affecting pressure gauges, vacuum gauges, digital pressure gauges, pressure transmitters, recorders and related process instrumentation.

Depending on the design and condition of the instrument, repair work may involve replacing damaged components, correcting mechanical problems, renewing connections or fittings, restoring the pressure system and recalibrating the instrument. The available work will be confirmed after inspection.

Temperature and process instrument repairs

Our repair capabilities include selected temperature and process measuring instruments, including mechanical and electronic equipment. We can investigate problems affecting indication, response, connections, sensors and remote-reading arrangements.

Pressure and temperature instruments, including suitable recorders, may also be re-ranged and recalibrated for a different application. Where an instrument uses a remote sensing element, it may be possible to alter or replace the capillary arrangement. Suitability depends on the construction and condition of the equipment.

Repairs for electronic and mechanical instrumentation

GNW works with a broad range of electronic and mechanical measuring equipment used in production, maintenance, inspection and testing. As designs vary considerably between manufacturers and models, we assess each instrument individually rather than assuming that every fault or component can be repaired.

Send us the manufacturer, model, measuring range and a description of the problem before dispatch where possible. Photographs can also be useful when the equipment is large, unusual or visibly damaged. Our team can then advise whether the instrument is suitable for inspection.

Refurbishment of older and obsolete equipment

Replacing an older instrument is not always straightforward. The original model may be obsolete, while a modern alternative may not share the same dimensions, connections, range or operating characteristics. In these circumstances, refurbishment can provide a practical way to keep suitable equipment in service.

We repair and refurbish many obsolete instruments where replacement parts, compatible components and the condition of the unit allow. Refurbishment can be tailored to the equipment and the customer’s requirements, from essential functional repairs to a more complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration. Where possible, refurbished equipment is returned to a condition consistent with its original design.

Instrument modifications and re-ranging

Some instruments remain serviceable but are no longer suited to their original application. GNW can modify selected equipment so that it can be used in a new or altered installation, subject to the instrument design and the technical requirements of the proposed use.

Typical modification work includes changing instrument connections and fittings, extending capillaries on remote-reading instruments, re-ranging pressure and temperature instruments, and recalibrating tank gauges for use with different products. We can also assess less common modification requirements where standard replacement equipment is unavailable or unsuitable.

Any proposed modification must be technically appropriate for the equipment and its intended duty. We will review the application before confirming what can be done.

Repair and calibration from one supplier

A repaired measuring instrument may require calibration before it is returned to service. GNW provides calibration services across pressure, temperature, weighing, electrical, dimensional, torque, force, flow and other measurement disciplines, allowing many instruments to be repaired and calibrated through the same supplier.

Where calibration is included, a calibration certificate is supplied for the completed work. UKAS calibration can be arranged where specifically required and available for the instrument concerned. Please state the certification requirement when requesting a quotation, as UKAS calibration is a separate service and is not automatically included.

Selected on-site instrument repairs

Some repair and adjustment work may be possible at the customer’s premises. This can be useful for fixed equipment, larger installations or instruments that are difficult to remove and transport. On-site availability depends on the nature of the fault, the instrument and the facilities required to complete and verify the repair.

Provide as much information as possible when enquiring about an on-site repair. We will review the requirement and advise whether the work can reasonably be completed at your premises or whether workshop inspection is needed.

What happens after we receive your instrument?

The instrument is first identified and inspected so that our technicians can assess the reported fault and its general condition. If repair work is practical, we will provide details of the proposed work and the cost. No additional repair work is completed without authorisation.

Once approved, the repair or refurbishment is carried out and the instrument is checked before return. Where calibration has been requested or is required as part of the agreed work, this is completed after the repair. If an instrument cannot be repaired economically or suitable parts are unavailable, we will explain the position so that you can make an informed decision about replacement.
