Choosing industrial weighing equipment

A reliable weighing system starts with the application, not the instrument. The load to be measured, the way it is supported and the conditions around the installation all affect the choice of load cell, mounting hardware and electronics.

For tanks, silos and hoppers, consider the maximum working load as well as the vessel weight, product movement and any pipework or restraints that could transfer force away from the load cells. Purpose-made mounting kits help introduce the load correctly and protect the sensor from side loads, uplift and movement.

The load cell signal must then be matched to the control system. A local weight indicator suits installations where an operator needs to see or control the process at the vessel or machine. Where the reading is needed elsewhere, a remote display can repeat it at a more practical viewing position. Weight transmitters and load cell digitisers provide analogue, serial or industrial network outputs for connection to PLCs, HMIs and SCADA systems.

Environmental conditions matter too. Stainless-steel construction and suitable ingress protection may be needed in washdown, food-processing, outdoor or corrosive areas. Cable length, junction box location, electrical screening and earthing should also be considered at the design stage.

Industrial weighing systems in practice

Industrial weighing equipment is used wherever weight forms part of a production, storage or handling process. Typical installations include tanks, silos, hoppers, filling machines, batching systems, conveyors and purpose-built weighing platforms.

The load cells do the measuring, but their installation determines how well the system performs. Correctly sized sensors, suitable mounting assemblies and well-routed cabling help prevent side loads, movement and electrical interference from affecting the reading.
