Industrial weighing systems in practice

Industrial weighing equipment is used wherever weight forms part of a production, storage or handling process. Typical installations include tanks, silos, hoppers, filling machines, batching systems, conveyors and purpose-built weighing platforms.

The load cells do the measuring, but their installation determines how well the system performs. Correctly sized sensors, suitable mounting assemblies and well-routed cabling help prevent side loads, movement and electrical interference from affecting the reading.

Indicators provide a clear local display and can give operators access to weighing, batching or control functions. Where the weight needs to be used elsewhere, a transmitter or digitiser converts the load cell signal into an analogue, serial or network output for a PLC, HMI or SCADA system.

Multi-cell systems normally use a junction box to combine and balance the individual signals. The enclosure, cable entries and environmental protection should suit the installation, particularly in washdown, outdoor or corrosive areas.

GNW supplies individual components for repairs and upgrades as well as equipment for new weighing systems. If you are unsure which load cell, mounting kit or communication option is compatible with your application, contact us before ordering.

Load cells and mounting hardware

Measure tanks, silos, hoppers, platforms and suspended loads with sensors and mounting assemblies selected for the load direction and installation.

Weight indicators and displays

Give operators a clear local weight reading, or repeat the display at a more convenient and visible position.

PLC and process integration

Connect weighing data to control systems using analogue, serial and industrial network transmitters or load cell digitisers.

Industrial weighing equipment applications

These are the jobs we most often see industrial weighing equipment specified for, from monitoring material in a vessel to checking a finished load before it leaves site.

Tank and silo weighing

For tanks, hoppers and silos, load cells measure the vessel and its contents while a transmitter sends the reading to a display, PLC or control system.

Manufacturing and batching systems

Batching and filling systems use live weight data to control material additions, stop feeds at the target weight and keep production consistent.

Food production and logistics

In food production, packaging and logistics, weighing equipment is used to check ingredients, finished packs, stock movements and outgoing loads.

How to specify an industrial weighing system

Start with the load, mechanical arrangement and working environment, then select the display or output needed by the operator and control system.

Define the load and mounting arrangement

Allow for the vessel or structure, product load, load direction, movement, pipework and any forces that may act on the sensors.

Choose the required output

Decide whether the system needs a local display, analogue output, serial connection or a specific PLC communication network.

Check the installation environment

Consider washdown, moisture, corrosion, temperature, cable routing and enclosure protection before selecting the equipment.

Plan calibration and maintenance

Provide safe access for calibration and inspection, and identify any traceability or process-tolerance requirements at the design stage.

Industrial Weighing Equipment FAQs

Choosing the right equipment often comes down to four questions: what is being weighed, how it is supported, where the signal needs to go and what conditions the equipment will face.
