Understanding Pressure Gauge Selection

Pressure gauges provide local indication of gas or liquid pressure within machinery and process systems. Analogue gauges commonly use a Bourdon tube, while capsule elements are used for selected low-pressure gas measurements. Digital gauges use an electronic pressure sensor and numerical display.

Select the pressure type before the range: gauge pressure is referenced to atmosphere; absolute pressure is referenced to vacuum; vacuum measures below atmospheric pressure; and compound gauges cover both vacuum and positive pressure.

The normal operating pressure should sit comfortably within the selected scale. Allow margin for pulsation, surges and overpressure, and consider a glycerine-filled gauge or suitable accessory where vibration or rapid pressure fluctuation affects the instrument.

Materials must suit both the process medium and the environment. Stainless-steel construction improves corrosion resistance, but food, pharmaceutical, chemical or washdown suitability depends on wetted parts, seals, connection design, cleaning method and the complete product specification.

General purpose pressure gauges

Dry, general-purpose gauges provide straightforward local indication for compatible air, water, pneumatic and hydraulic duties.

Industrial and glycerine filled gauges

Industrial and glycerine-filled gauges suit more demanding installations. Liquid filling steadies pointer movement where vibration or pulsation would otherwise reduce readability.

Stainless steel pressure gauges

All-stainless-steel gauges improve corrosion resistance. Confirm wetted parts, seals, connection and cleaning requirements before specifying one for aggressive media or hygienic environments.

How to choose a pressure gauge

Identify the pressure type first, then compare range, accuracy, materials, dial size, connection, entry position and environmental conditions.

Choose the correct pressure range

Choose gauge, absolute, vacuum or compound measurement to match the application. Select a scale that keeps normal pressure comfortably within range and allows for expected surges or pulsation.

Consider the operating environment

Consider ambient conditions, vibration, pulsation, weather exposure and cleaning. Glycerine filling can improve readability under vibration, while material compatibility must be checked separately.

Select the correct dial size and mounting style

Choose a dial that is readable from the operating position and fits the available space. Confirm both the thread and whether bottom or back entry suits the pipework or panel.

Review media compatibility

Check the wetted-part and seal materials against the process medium, temperature and cleaning method. Case material alone does not determine process compatibility.
